the world in 1928

When we see those modern houses of the twenties we often make the wrong associations.
I collected some photo's of objects from that period to prove my point. I focused on 1928 since the house from the previous post is dated 1928. I wondered what objects they might have known. All of this for the rich only of coarse...

It took quite some time to google pictures of objects of exactly this year, after almost a century things get blurred and technology advanced fast even then.

Gershwin composed 'American in Paris' but it was also the time of Schoenberg who wrote 'Variations for Orchestra opus 31' that year.


Electrically recorded 78rpm disc where state-of-the-art back then, but reproduction would have been mechanical with hand-cranked record players.

Radio was still in its infancy, Radio Belgique started in 1923 but the public broadcasting institute (NIR) would only see the light in 1931.

talking movies

Until 'The Jazz Singer' of 1927 all movies were silent. 'Steamboat Willy' was the first cartoon film with sound, released in 1928.



Black and white but technicolor was already invented in 1922.

Television was already invented as were video discs...

Graf Zeppelin made the very first commercial passenger flight across the Atlantic, departing Friedrichshafen at 7:54 AM on October 11, 1928, and landing at Lakehurst, New Jersey on October 15, 1928, after a flight of 111 hours and 44 minutes.

architecture

While you were on that other side of the ocean you could have marveled over the Chrysler building (1928-1931). For a brief moment it was the tallest building on earth.

By contrast Le Corbusier completed the 'villa savoye' in 1928.
