led history

I have been using leds for something like 30 years and it never occured to me that the phenomenon of light emitting diodes was discovered as early as 1907. A British engineer by the name of H.J.Round published his findings that year.
You can do a similar experiment with a piece of siliconcarbide and a needle.
A photo on the 'make' blog shows you the result.

Then in 1922 it was observed again by Losev in Leningrad. Unfortunately Losev died in the siege of Leningrad.
The idea resurfaced in the early fifties.
In 2004 Nick Holonyak was presented the Lemelson-MIT Prize for the invention of the led in the early sixties.
