hidden extensions in windows
By default windows hides file extensions in the file explorer. Now you would think as I that this is no big deal, just turn off that 'feature' in the explorer settings.
As it turns out windows still hides some extensions. There is an entry on the F-secure blog about this.
Naturally I had to check this out.
I first created a file with a .pif extension.
The extension is hidden in the file explorer:
This can be solved by editing the registry, there is a key called NeverShowExt which you can delete. Look under

I created a file with a .shs extension.

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\CLASSES\ShellScrap]I deleted the entry for the .shs extension and did a reboot.
